The Reading Room: a cozy reading timer with your book's soundtrack

Pick a book, light a candle and read in chapter-sized sprints. The book’s Spotify playlist plays while you read and pauses for breaks, soft rain or a crackling fire fills the quiet, and a library card keeps your pages and your streak.

  • 5–120 minute sprints
  • 5 live soundscapes
  • 20 rooms to read in

Read in chapter-sized sprints

A reading sprint is a stretch of focused reading with a short break after it. Choose how long your chapter feels: 15, 25, 45 or 60 minutes, or any length from 5 to 120 in five-minute steps. Read one to four sprints, with a 5 or 10-minute interlude between them, or none at all.

The candle is the timer. It burns down as the minutes pass, the room dims toward evening as the session goes on, and a soft bell marks the end of each sprint. Hide the clock if you would rather not watch the time. Minutes are measured by the clock, not counted in the background, so locking your phone or switching tabs never loses time, and an unfinished session waits for you to come back.

  1. Choose a book. Create its playlist, or open any playlist in the library.
  2. Open the Reading Room. Every playlist page has a Reading Room button.
  3. Light the candle. Set the chapter length and sprints, then start reading.

On a keyboard: Space pauses, F goes full screen, H hides the clock and M mutes the ambience.

Your book’s playlist follows the timer

Every book on BookTuning gets a soundtrack: a Spotify playlist matched to its mood and story. In the Reading Room it starts with your first sprint, pauses for interludes and whenever you pause, and picks up again with the next sprint, so the music keeps the same rhythm as your reading.

If Spotify’s player cannot load, a regular Spotify player appears and you press play yourself; the timer never depends on the music. Listeners who are not signed in to Spotify may hear previews instead of full tracks.

How to choose music for reading

Reading ambience: rain, fireplace, night wind, library

Each room suggests a soundscape to sit under the music, or to read with on its own. Change it, set its volume or turn it off:

  • Rain on the window for rainy streets, storms and tea houses
  • A crackling fire for cozy cabins and Christmas evenings
  • Night wind with crickets for camps, deserts and treehouses
  • A library clock with turning pages for quiet study
  • A starship hum for science fiction

The sounds are generated live in your browser, so there is nothing to download and no short loop to notice. Press M to mute them at any time.

Twenty cozy rooms to read in

The Reading Room opens in a scene that suits your book: a rainy bookshop or a lighthouse study for a mystery, an orbital reading deck or a neon city loft for science fiction, a gothic library for dark academia, a seasonal room for a holiday edition. Pick another under “The view”, and your choice is remembered for that book. Gentle pixel weather drifts across each scene, and you can switch it off.

A library card for your pages and streak

When you close the book, note the page you reached and stamp your library card. It keeps every session for that book, fills in your bookmark next time, and shows:

  • pages read and minutes read this week
  • a 14-day strip of little candles for the days you read
  • your reading pace in pages per hour
  • an optional, private line worth keeping

Without an account, your card stays on this device. Sign in and it is kept in your account and shown on your profile to you alone; sessions already saved on the device are added the first time you sign in.

Reading timer questions

What are reading sprints?

Reading sprints are timed blocks of focused reading with short breaks between them. In the Reading Room you pick a chapter length of 15, 25, 45 or 60 minutes (or anything from 5 to 120), one to four sprints, and an interlude of none, 5 or 10 minutes.

Is there a free reading timer with music?

Yes. The Reading Room is free in your browser. Your book's Spotify playlist starts with the first sprint, pauses for interludes and resumes with the next sprint. Listeners who are not signed in to Spotify may hear previews instead of full tracks.

How long should a reading sprint be?

Start with a preset that matches a chapter: 15 minutes for a short one, 25 for a standard session, 45 or 60 for a long chapter. After a few sessions your library card shows your pace in pages per hour, which helps you size the next sprint.

Does the Pomodoro Technique work for reading?

A 25-minute sprint followed by a 5-minute interlude follows the same work-and-break rhythm as the Pomodoro Technique®, developed by Francesco Cirillo. If 25 minutes cuts your chapters in half, choose a longer sprint of up to 120 minutes.

Can I read with rain or fireplace sounds?

Yes. Choose rain on the window, a crackling fire, night wind with crickets, a library clock with turning pages or a starship hum. The sounds are generated live in your browser rather than streamed, and M mutes them at any time.

How do I track my reading streak?

When you close the book, enter the page you reached and stamp the library card. It keeps your pages, a 14-day strip of the days you read, your minutes this week and your reading pace, plus an optional private line worth keeping.

Do I need an account or an app?

No. The Reading Room runs in the browser on a phone or a computer. Without an account your sessions stay on that device; sign in to keep them in your account. Full screen and keeping the screen awake are used where the browser supports them.
